Michael ve küçük arkadaşlarının kötü kalpli uyuşturucu satıcısı Mr. Big'e karşı verdiği mücadeleyi konu eden film senaryosu başlamadan önce canlı Man in Mirrror performansı ve Michael'ın müzikal geçmişinin bir özetiyle giriş yapılan Moonwalker filmi MJ'in film adına yaptığı en akılda kalan projesi olmuştur. MJ'in Bad Dünya Turunu sürdürdüğü 1988 yılında sinemalarda gösterime giren Moonwalker efektleri ve animasyon çalışmalarının yanı sıra Smooth Criminal videosunu da bünyesinde barındırmaktadır. Esasında Michael, Smooth Criminal için uzun bir klip çekmeyi düşünmüş ve çapı büyüyen projeyi daha sonra bir filme dönüştürmeye karar vermiştir. Moonwalker filmi de böyle bir gelişim ile ortaya çıkmıştır.
