Hikaye ilginç oyunlar oynamayı seven, zengin bir detektif romanı yazarı olan Andrew Wyke etrafında dönmektedir. Kuaför salonları zinciri sahibi Milo Tindle'ın karısı Marguerite'ı aldattığını bilmektedir. Wyke Milo'yu şehrim dışındaki malikanesine davet eder. Wyke da karısını Tea adlı bir kızla aldatmaktadır. Wyke Tindle'dan değerli bazı mücevherleri çalmasıp satmasını ve aldığı parayı karısı Marguerite ile mutlu bir şekilde yaşamaları için kullanmasını teklif eder. Böylece Wyke da sigortadan aldığı parayla Tea ile mutlu bir şekilde vakit geçirecektir. Fakat ortalık karışacak ve bu teklifin sonuçları çok tehlikeli boyutlara ulaşacaktır.
