Cottontail sevgi, kabullenme ve ailedeki kayıpların evrensel bir portresini çiziyor. Eşi Akiko’nun ölümünden sonra Kenzaburo ile yetişkin oğlu Toshi, neredeyse öbür dünyadan saydıkları bir mektup alırlar. Akiko, eşinden ve oğlundan küllerini çocukken en çok sevdiği yere, İngiltere’deki Windermere Gölü’ne serpmelerini istemektedir. Bu beklenmedik talep karşısında şaşıran iki adam, Akiko’nun son arzusunu yerine getirmek için Tokyo’dan İngiltere’ye giderler. Ancak Kenzaburo’nun yolculuğu tüm ailesinden zorlu olacaktır.
